There’s something profoundly inspiring about being in the presence of a legend. When I had the opportunity to work with Nile Rodgers and his incredible singers, I was struck by the magnitude of his contributions to music—many of which I hadn’t fully grasped until that moment. Nile’s influence spans decades, and his work is woven into the very fabric of music history. From his iconic role in Chic to his groundbreaking collaborations with artists like Pharrell Williams, Nile Rodgers has consistently created, evolved, and left an indelible mark on the world.
One of the highlights of my career was sharing the stage with Nile. I was singing background vocals alongside the band that plays the UK bandT ake That, during a major event in Glasgow, Scotland. As a singer, there’s nothing quite like being surrounded by other talented vocalists, and working alongside Nile’s singers, Kimberly Davis and Folami Ankoanda-Thompson, was pure magic. Listening to them during soundcheck and performing with them on stage was not just a privilege—it was a masterclass in excellence.
If you’ve been following my Speak with Mastery series, you know that I’ve had the rare privilege of working with some of the greatest legends in the industry. And let me tell you, I never take these opportunities for granted. Being in the presence of greatness is something I cherish deeply. But it’s not just about observing; it’s about learning and growing.
What I learned from working with Nile Rodgers is this: study the greats, understand their craft, and, most importantly, learn to fall in love with your own greatness. It’s easy to be awestruck by legends, but what’s truly transformative is recognizing and nurturing the greatness within yourself. Nile isn't just a music legend; guitarist and composer, he's stayed relevant from the 70s until now. No mean feat.
